December 4, 2010- Ordinary to Extraordinary Sculpture with 100 items!
This week we will be building sculptures made from 100 everyday (relatively small) items. Students will need to bring in to class 100 items to work with. Students should view the power point posted for ideas of items, and to begin planning on how to work with that material as well as possible imagery that can be created using this item. In class we will provide some adhesion techniques and materials (however if a student comes up with a way to attach materials that is somewhat unconventional, they should consider bringing materials to help with these attachments), as well as some construction methods and materials. We will not have 100 items for students to pick from to use so..... COME PREPARED! ;) See you all Saturday!

Artist Seminar with Ms. Laverne Miers-Bond
Blindfolds, sticks, and beeswax....hmmmm. Ms. Miers-Bond showed us some expressive drawing techniques - such as drawing with an extended paintbrush, drawing based on touch only (hence the blindfold), drawing based on the touch of a partner, and a really cool method of treating paper with beeswax.

Hello! This Saturday is our last class and there is a lot to do. During class, we will work on a large collaborative artwork. While you are working on this piece as a group, you will fill in some info. (title, medium, etc.) regarding the work you choose to be in the GT Art Show at the Board of Education. An invitation will be sent to your house regarding the opening of this show.
Additionally, you have some homework to do. You must write a short Artist Statement and email it to us before May 6th. See the column at right for all Artist Statement information.
ALSO, if you have artwork at home that you would like to go in the show, don't forget to bring it to class on Saturday.

Happy Spring! Students will use a master artist to transform an ordinary object into something extraordinary. Students must research the style of an artist - either contemporary or classic - and bring in visual references. NO PRINTING OUT LAST MINUTE REFERENCES AT HOWARD!!
Students will use the artist's style to transform the surface of the object they bring - a shoe, a small kitchen appliance, an umbrella, etc.

March 20 CLASS
We will be meeting tomorrow at Howard to do some more work in the visual journals we bound last time class met. PLEASE remember to bring your journals to class tomorrow if you took it home last class. We will be using our journals to create collaborative spreads in them based on specific prompts. To prepare some of the pages for other artists to work on, PLEASE apply some light watercolor washes (or really watered down acrylic) on a few of the pages so that they will be dry for tomorrow.

FEBRUARY 20 CLASS at the COLUMBIA MALL
Finally! We meet again! This Saturday, per the syllabus, we are meeting at the Columbia Mall at 10am near the carousel. Again, we are NOT MEETING AT HOWARD HIGH SCHOOL FOR CLASS. Pick-up from the Columbia Mall will still be at 1:00.
Students will explore figure/ground relationships (the relationship between the model and the surrounding environment) by capturing a figure, or groups of figures, interacting inside an interior space. Students may produce a series of drawings or one larger drawing.
Students will need to bring their preferred drawing supplies and a sketchbook. We will provide drawing paper, small drawing boards, and some pencils. If you'd like to work in wet media, we recommend bringing a small watercolor set and a cup for water.

FEB. 6th CLASS - hmmmmmmmmm....
For our next scheduled class this Saturday, per the syllabus, we are using a master artist as inspiration to transform the surface of an ordinary object. We went over the homework at the end of last class, BUT as a refresher, you were asked to bring an ordinary, everyday object to paint in the style of one of the artists you researched. You were asked to research 3 artists, one whose style you will put on your object. What kinds of objects, you ask? A shoe, a tool, toys, a handbag, belt,, toilet seat, an umbrella, small kitchen appliance (hand mixer, toaster, tea kettle). Choose something with enough surface area to paint. ALSO, make sure to have the artists' visuals prepared and taped into your sketchbook for reference as you paint your object.

JANUARY 23rd's CLASS
SO...another snow/sleet/ice/freezing winter event is looming over us. Therefore...
IF SCHOOL IS CANCELED TOMORROW, SATURDAY'S CLASS WILL BE CANCELED AS WELL. Even if it's nice and sunshiny and warmish on Saturday, class still will be canceled. This is the county's policy on Friday cancellations.
If we do, hopefully, see you on Saturday, don't forget your visuals/materials for the visual analogy piece we will be creating. Using oil pastels or paint (acrylic - if you want to use oil, bring your own), illustrate a visual connection between a portrait (you or someone else) and an object. You can connect the person and object using color, texture, shape, etc. Remember the Vytorin advertisements we showed you? That's what we're talking about...
Hopefully, we'll be seeing you this Saturday! Be careful and stay warm!!
